I happened to preview this album, and it’s the xianxia style I fell for on the very first listen. Why did 《相思引》 sound so familiar? Turns out a friend who plays 诛仙 had played it for me before.
That reminds me — some of Liu Fang’s covers of classics are great too, and they really hold up. For a while I even had her version of 《青花瓷》 as my phone ringtone.
Compared with the cookie-cutter pop music flooding everything right now, this new age style with its old-Chinese flavor is a real relief for the ears.
Dong Zhen, long known in gaming circles for her behind-the-scenes songwriting, moved in front of the mic in 2007, and her debut audiophile album 《贞爱一回》 officially announced her arrival as a singer. Dong Zhen’s voice is sweet and tender with a character all its own; she can make a song achingly beautiful and utterly absorbing, and she is widely regarded as the best choice for Chinese guofeng xianxia music. She has sung theme songs for many well-known games, such as 《逍遥游》 for 《新绝代双骄前传》 and 《雕花笼》 for 《鱼戏江湖》. In May 2008 she wrote and performed 《情醉》 as the theme song for Perfect World’s online game 《诛仙》, in June 2009 she again sang for 《诛仙》, this time the theme song of a new expansion, 《相思引》, and in July she wrote and performed 《仙恋》 for Shanda Games’ 《蜀山新传》… The steady release of one classic xianxia piece after another cemented Dong Zhen’s status as “the first talented woman of Chinese-style xianxia music.”
Dong Zhen herself produced 《返璞归贞》. Besides collecting all the hugely popular online game theme songs she has sung over the past few years — 《相思引》, 《情醉》 — and covering old classics like 《新鸳鸯蝴蝶梦》 and 《追梦人》, it also includes brand-new originals she wrote with care, such as 《金缕衣》 and 《返璞归贞》. It is the first album in China that genuinely represents the creative standard of xianxia music, a heavyweight compilation that xianxia music fans have been waiting for. Dong Zhen’s singing is fresh and free of convention, deeply felt, a style entirely her own — truly, “misty rain over Jiangnan reveals the return to simplicity; immortal notes, like tangled threads, all return to Zhen.”
