I remember, back before I switched my blog over to WordPress — that was more than a year ago now — I came across an amateur-made fighting game online. Most of the characters are played by real people. Hilarious, brilliant, seriously impressive.
I remember the author’s blog was called “Jiangxi Dinosaur’s Lair” back then. There were only a handful of characters, the story wasn’t finished, and there were plenty of bugs, haha. I downloaded it and played for a while, but after I reinstalled my system I never went back to it.
Not long ago (August 8), I saw the whole internet buzzing about this game, Dong Dong Never Die. This is the second version I’d been waiting over a year for — long awaited, finally here~
How great would it be to have the spare time to put together something this fun.

Dong Dong Never Die Online Official Version Genre: FTG fighting Platform: PC Size: 376M zipped, 930M unzipped Made by: Zhang Qiang, Wang Dong, et al. Release date: August 8, 2009
In 2009, Guangzhou is set to host a “Street Fighter” tournament. On the eve of the finals, a large number of contestants mysteriously disappear, and every clue points to “Bio Man”. “Dong Dong”, a criminal police officer with the Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department, sets off southward. Disguised as a fighter, he vows to uncover the truth of the case. Who exactly is Bio Man? Why have so many contestants gone missing? In 2009 the winds of change blow, and a catastrophe is about to arrive. This battle of Dong Dong’s will change the fate of many people…
Work on Dong Dong Never Die Online Official Version began in October 2006 and was finally completed in August 2009 — three years of spare time in total. The game was made by a group of Chinese game enthusiasts, developed with 2DFM. The game features Chinese voice acting throughout (Mandarin plus some regional dialects) and Chinese subtitles throughout. It contains 36 stages, 24 selectable characters and 15 non-selectable characters. The photos collected for the game numbered as many as 18,000, of which roughly 10,000 actually made it into the game.
Version notes: ★ Building on the full version bundled with issue 231 of Game Console Practical Techniques, the main menu logo now carries the label “August 8, 2009 Online Official Version”. ★ Fixed a number of bugs; tweaked the stats of some characters; lowered the difficulty of Bio Man and the 1V7 stage; some infinite combos were weakened; Marshmallow gained a new super special move. Cutscene story content was added and revised. ★ Because 2DFM wasn’t optimized well enough, the character select screen lags badly the first time you enter the game; after the game has been running for a while it smooths out. This bug can’t be fixed. ★ The currently unresolved bugs are as follows. If any 2DFM enthusiast has found a solution, please do let me know: 1. Pause the game for more than a few dozen seconds and then resume the fight — there’s a chance a small number of visual effects will disappear, such as shockwaves, hit effects, etc. They return to normal after the round ends. 2. At the moment a super move is triggered, you can’t stop projectiles in flight. ★ The most important update is the bundled Chinese-localized online play program — it supports internet and LAN matches, and supports random stages during local versus play (see “说明_Readme.txt” included with the game).
